This section of the website will look at and share some of my favourite leadership videos, mostly via TED talks.
Stop managing, start leading
This Ted talk on leadership is by a chap called Hamza Khan. He speaks about how he is a bad boss, but by the end of the talk, it's clear why he is this "bad boss" he makes out. Some of the highlights of this leadership speech are really home-hitting. Hamza speaks of the reason why we have managers and why we need to rethink this model of management, as we, people, don't in fact like being "managed". He touches on how all too often, managers are quick to sacrifice us as workers for workplace discipline, often with no true reason or justification other than their own gratification and power as a manager. A really interesting theory he suggests is about this model of 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation, and 8 hours of rest. Gosh, wouldn't that be ideal? In his speech on leadership, he shoots down management, and says its time for cocreation, nourishment, and coaching of people, not managing, but leading. Seeing individuals as exactly that, individuals, not statistics or "hours".
Why good leaders make you feel safe
Simon Sinek is an amazing speaker on all this leadership and this video is one of his best I feel. He talks about the sheer importance of feeling safe as people, within an organisation and with that, will come the respect and followship from the people to the leaders:Â "When the people feel safe and protected by the leadership in the organisation, the natural reaction is to trust and cooperate". He goes on to suggest "Leadership is a choice, not a rank and a leader is someone who looks after the people to the left and the right of them". Hopefully you like this video and can relate. Although it is very business-focused, it is relatable to any sector.
The rarest commodity is leadership without ego
This video really hits home with anyone who has any exposure to true leadership, where the speaker highlights the importance of leaders, their underrepresentation and the overprescription of managers rather than leaders. If we push people, such as managers might, we don't know how they will react, but if we pull them alongside, along with us, that's true leadership.
Great Leadership starts with self-leadership
I really like this video on leadership which highlights the importance of self-leadership. Can we be leaders if we can't lead ourselves? According to the speaker, self-leadership requires self-awareness, self-reflection and self-regulation. Do you agree?
